1. Formal characteristics of Primitivist art:
-Flat
-distorted
-child like (naive)
-rough
-not to proportion
-Anti-modernist.
2. Primitive: It refers to the subject matter, it is the person we are painting or the culture we are representing.
Primitivism: It is an art movement where the attitude from the artist is that the primitive is desirable and exotic.
3. I believe due to global warming contemporary “primitivism” is becoming more evident. Take for example earth hour- where everyone turns off all electricity for an hour and just has candle light instead. People are being pushed to get back to the basics and use less electricity/ technology. We are getting pushed by the government and other groups of people like environmentalists to basically save our planet and get back to primitive lifestyles.
4. The hammock- Arthur Boyd.
This art work has many of the characteristics of Primitivist art. It is flat, distorted, rough and not to proportion. Although the subject matter isn’t exotic the artist or the viewer could see it as desirable as I find it is depicting a carefree world with no extravagances.
